Fondly called 'Gana Gandharv' by countless admirers, Balu was a natural phenomenon. What he leaves behind are not just his over-40,000 songs in 16 Indian languages but innumerable Shishyas (students), well-groomed under his guidance through the Paadutaa Tiyyagaa, Paadalani Vundi and Swaraabhishekam programmes on popular TV channels. He brought out the latent talent in many in the younger generation, even though he himself did not have a formal learning in music. In the Telugu film 'O Papa Lali', he sang a song without break. In February 1981, he had set an all time record by singing 21 songs in a single day.
Popular for the unique drama in his voice, SP developed a command over different modulations. Known for his humble conduct,
He was fluent in Telugu (mother tongue), Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi, and preferred to converse with others in the language they were comfortable with. He sang songs even in languages which have no script.
Born on June 4, 1946, at Konetammapet in Nellore district of then Madras Presidency, SP’s family had Telugu origins. His father, SP Sambamurthy, was an exponent of Harikatha. He took keen interest in learning instruments but had no plans of making a career in music. Balu used to participate in his father's Harikatha programmes. He enrolled at JNTU College of Engineering, Anantapur, dreaming of landing a job in the government as an engineer.
His mother, Shakuntalamma, passed away in February last year. His sister, SP Sailaja, is also a popular playback singer.

Last year, as if he knew he was nearing death, Balu gifted his ancestral house in Nellore to Kanchi Peetham for running a vedic school.
He made an accidental entry into playback singing. A college friend of SP entered his name in a light music competition in 1963-64 and he went on to win the contest. At another competition, music director SP Kodandapani asked for an audition and was impressed by the budding singer’s talent. A vocal fold nodule in 1989 had threatened SP’s career. Doctors said he could either stop singing or risk a surgery with the danger of damaging his voice forever. Despite the risks, he went for it and emerged stronger.
In December 1966, SP made his professional debut with the Telugu movie 'Sri Sri Sri Maryada Ramanna'. The song 'Emi Ee Vintha Moham' from this movie became very popular. He became the voice of
He had very close friendship with several music stalwarts.
Subrahmanyam had trained in classical singing but it was no bar for him in quickly learning the nuances and adopting himself to work with tough composers like MS Viswanathan during the early days of his career.
SP received Padma Sri (2001) and Padma Bhushan (2011). He won the first national award in 1980 for 'Sankarabharanam'. The next year saw him foraying into Hindi films and won the national award for his very first song in Hindi, 'Tere Mere Beech Mein, from K Balachander’s '
Balu won six National Film Awards for best male playback singer for Telugu, Kannada, Tamil and Hindi songs. His awards are countless. He also won a Bollywood Filmfare Award and six Filmfare Awards South. He was honoured with the NTR National Award in 2012.
SP completed half a century of playback singing in December 2016. The same year, he was honoured with the Centenary Award for Indian Film Personality of the Year at the International Film Festival of India.

Though music directors Laxmikant-Pyarelal were against using SP Bala Subrahmanyam, given his heavy accent, Balachander convinced them that his accent would appear authentic for Kamal Hasan’s character of a Tamilian in the movie. He had lent his voice to actors like
His songs in the blockbuster ‘Hum Aapke Hain Koun’ became immensely popular. The soundtrack of ‘Maine Pyaar Kiya’ was very successful. He bagged Filmfare Award for best male playback singer for the song ‘Dil Deewana’.
As a character artist, he carved a niche for himself and was loved by his fans. In 'Keladi Kanmani' (1990), directed by Vsanth, SP played the role of a widower with an impressive singing talent. It became a huge hit, successfully running for 285 days in Tamil Nadu theaters. 'Midhunam', with only two characters which portrayed a wife and husband in their later stages, was one of the super hit movies Balu had acted in. He got a Nandi for this.

Production[edit]
Development and casting[edit]
Puli was director S. J. Suryah's dream project.[7] Initially he planned to make the movie with Akshay Kumar in Hindi[citation needed] and later with Vijay in Tamil[7] and he sent bound scripts to both superstars. But both the projects did not happen. The storyline was also discussed with Malayalam actor Suresh Gopi.[8] Later, after the confirmation from Kalyan, it was finalised to make in Telugu with Pawan Kalyan . Hansika Motwani was originally signed to play the heroine[9] but was replaced by Nikeesha Patel, who made her acting debut in this film.[10] The film was sent to the censor board on 4 September and received an A certificate.[11]
Filming[edit]
The movie was shot in various parts of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, as well as in Malaysia, Singapore, Bangkok and Dubai.[12] The filming was almost completed by May 2010, but the songs were shot from 18 May onwards only.[13]Pawan kalyan's acting fee for this film was ₹10 crore (US$1.4 million).Puli was made with a budget of ₹40 crore (US$5.6 million) from which ₹35 crore (US$4.9 million) is production costs.
Title[edit]
The movie was originally titled 'Komaram Puli'. 'Komaram' was taken from the surname of the Gond martyr Komaram Bheem, who fought against the erstwhile Asaf Jahi dynasty for the liberation of Hyderabad State.[14] However, following the objections by Komaram Sony Rao, grandson of Komaram Bheem, and also by a section of Telangana Joint Action Committee activists who called for a boycott of the film, the movie was renamed with title 'Puli' on the second day of its release.[4][5] The soundtrack album is titled 'Komaram Puli'.
Release and reception[edit]
The film was released worldwide with 950 prints in 1250 theatres,[15][16] a record of sorts for a Telugu film. The film's release faced a minor roadblock in the form of its title.[17][dead link] The film critic from NDTV warned the audience by saying 'watch the film at your own risk. It's a big-budget film with a solid casting. Just laugh at the poorly directed action scenes.'[18] The background score by A. R. Rahman and camerawork by Binod Pradhan were appreciated and many critics rated them as the highlight of the movie.[citation needed]
Its Nizam rights were sold to Geetha Arts for ₹12 crore (US$1.7 million) which is a record sum.[6]
Puli ticket rates price was sold for ₹75 (US$1.10) in its first week[19]

The makers of the film re-edited it due to very mixed to poor reviews and re-released the shortened version on 15 September 2010.[2]
Soundtrack[edit]
The film features a soundtrack consisting of 6 songs composed by A. R. Rahman and lyrics penned by Chandrabose. This is the third among Rahman's only three straight Telugu films that are not remakes or bilinguals. The highly anticipated soundtrack album was released on 20 August 2010.[20] The release rights of the album was purchased by Sony Music for ₹20 million.[21] The audio was launched by K Rosaiah, Rahman and his mother Kareema Begum in a function held at H.I.C.CNovotel, Hyderabad.[20][22] The function was attended by K Rosaiah, S. J. Suryah, Allu Aravind, Pawan Kalyan, Nikeesha Patel, Shriya Saran, A. R. Rahman, Chandrabose, Anand Sai, Singanamala Ramesh, S. R. Murthy and many others.[23] The soundtrack got overwhelming response and became a hot seller. The audio sales reached a total of 300,000 of CDs in the first three days, which is an all-time record in Telugu film history.[24]
The picturisation of the songs was also noted. Two songs were choreographed by Bollywood choreographer Ahmed Khan. The songs he choreographed were 'Power Star' (Pawan Kalyan's introduction song) and 'Dochey' (an item number featuring Shriya Saran). The songs were filmed in two schedules at Annapurna Studios beginning from 18 May.[13] Of the six songs written for the film, four songs were directly included in the film while the remaining two served as background songs.[12] Lyricist Chandrabose collaborated with Rahman for the second time through this film. He took almost three months to write the song 'Amma Thale', while all it took to write the song 'Maaralente' was 90 minutes.[12] A. R. Rahman's original score also received critical praise. Rahman collaborated with artists from three European countries to re-record the background score.[12]
